Transitioning to a foreign land and leaving behind aging parents can be emotionally taxing. In alignment with its commitment to family reunification, the Canadian government extends its support through various immigration programs. While spousal sponsorship remains a prominent pathway, the sponsorship of grandparents and parents constitutes another significant avenue within the family class immigration stream.
In 2017, the Government of Canada introduced a novel application intake system for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) implemented a random selection process, choosing 10,000 applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents eager to sponsor their parents or grandparents for immigration to Canada. The 2018 version incorporated additional inquiries to aid potential sponsors in self-assessing their eligibility, particularly regarding the fulfillment of minimum income prerequisites.
Should the parents’ immigration program not be currently feasible, exploring temporary residence options such as the Super Visa and Visitor Visa might offer a viable alternative.
If you did not receive an invitation in 2020 to sponsor your parents or grandparents, you can submit an interest-to-sponsor form in 2021 and remain vigilant for any subsequent rounds of sponsorship invitations.
If you receive an invitation to sponsor your parents or grandparents, it is imperative to submit a complete application package before the specified deadline. Once you are approved as a sponsor and your parents pass the eligibility assessment, they can begin their journey to Canada.
Please be aware that you only have one opportunity to submit the application package. Given the prolonged processing times, it is crucial to avoid any errors that could lead to additional delays or, in some instances, application denials. To streamline the process and mitigate potential challenges, consider engaging an immigration consultant. We offer various service options, including in-office and online services, tailored to your specific needs. Choose from full representation to self-managed alternatives, such as hourly consultations, final reviews, and do-it-yourself packages.
Parents and grandparents document checklist (IMM5771) is one of the forms you will need to mail with your sponsorship application. It includes list of sponsorship forms for parents and documents you need to prepare and send in with your application to sponsor. You cannot submit application online in support of PR for parents at this time.
Parents sponsorship application status and processing times may vary depending on number of applications received and in progress, as well as country of residence and visa office. Use online tools to check application status and find out current application processing time for parents and grandparents
Application processing fees are the same regardless of your country of residence. Application fees are payable to the Government of Canada and can be paid in different ways depending on the fee type and where you are paying from. While if you decide to retain our services, professional fees will be applicable.
Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship pool will open on September 20, 2021. Interest to Sponsor form must be submitted within the specified deadline (2 weeks). Those who expressed an interest to sponsor in 2020, but were not invited to apply, may be considered in the upcoming PGP 2021 lottery draw.
After PGP pool closes, IRCC will review the submissions and remove duplicate entries. They will randomly select and invite potential sponsors to apply to sponsor their parents and grandparents. If you didn’t receive invitation (see lottery results), you may consider Visitor Visa or Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents.
IRCC will email the randomly selected potential sponsors and invite them to apply. Everyone who submitted an interest to sponsor form got a confirmation number. Make sure to check the same email account you used on the submission form. Also, lottery results will be posted on IRCC website.
If you’re selected to apply, you must apply to become a sponsor and your parents and grandparents must apply for permanent residence. You must submit the applications before the deadline specified in your invitation. Additional Information about forms, fees and processing time can be found below.
